I got a record number of photos submitted for this week’s photo assignment! And perhaps more shocking, only one of the included photos was submitted after the deadline! Thanks to everyone who participated, and a special thanks to those who sent your possessions and/or your children airborne in the name of art. Here are the conclusions I have drawn from the submitted photos:
- Kids like to jump.
- The moon was recently full.
- Shetland Sheepdogs (or Collies? I can’t tell) have some serious hops.
- Photoshop rules can be bent for comedic value.
Go here to check out the photos! (flash plugin required - sorry, iPhone readers) I know which ones are my favorites, but I don’t want to cloud your judgement.
Surprise! I didn’t let six months pass this time, folks. Dust off those cameras and get ready for a Suburban Juggernaut week-long photo assignment!
For this assignment, all you have to do is take a picture where the subject of your photo is not touching anything. Don’t get all literal with me, you know what I mean. Your subject can only be touching air. So a leaf on a tree? Doesn’t apply. A leaf falling from a tree? Perfect! Elmo standing on the roof? No. Elmo jumping off the roof? Yes!

As long as you have planes or birds flying around your neighborhood, you know somebody who can jump, or you can throw something, you can do this assignment. However, if you live in an arid no-fly zone, none of your friends have legs, and your throwing arm is broken, go ahead and skip this one.
Assignments are due on Sunday October 19th at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Send your photos to photo@suburbanjuggernaut.com. Ready? Go!
Right after I proposed this assignment, I half regretted it. Not because I didn’t think you guys would rock it, because I knew you could. And you did. You rocked it like your given name was John Francis Bongiovi. But one of my goals of the photo assignments is to get you to take your camera out more. And I suspected that this might be an assignment that some of you photography buffs could complete by using photos you already have. If you can do a photo assignment without ever leaving the comfort of your computer chair, then I think the assignment is flawed!
On the other hand, you all have enough to do with your time. You don’t need to be challenged by some dude on the internet. And in the end, I’d rather have more people participate than have more taken-for-the-assignment photos. That said, the next assignment (for which I already have the idea, I just need to take a sample photo) will not likely be able to be completed using a photo you already have. I’ll make sure to build in extra time.
Enough rambling, let’s get to some photos! (Flash plugin required.)
I told you it was coming. You may not have believed me, after that four truths and a lie post. But here it is. The theme for this, the very first Suburban Juggernaut photo assignment, is reflection.
“What?” you ask. “Reflection,” I answer. All you have to do is take a picture of something reflected in something else. Though it may seem a bit on the artsy-fartsy side, I personally think this is one of the most open-ended and easy assignments yet. Do you have sunglasses? You can do this assignment! How about windows? A TV or computer display with a glossy screen? Chrome 22-inch rims or tinted windows on your Honda Odyssey? A Titleist 905T driver?

I originally wanted to rule out using mirrors, because that’s too easy. But I won’t, because I don’t want to stifle creativity. I’m not a stifler. I’m an enabler. In a good way.
Submit photos via email to photo@suburbanjuggernaut.com. Your assignment is due on Sunday, August 10th at 11:59 p.m. EDT. And by that, I mean try to get it to me by sometime on Monday the 11th. Also, as a special added incentive, I promise to wait until after the deadline to chastise any of you for not submitting photos.
As always, I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
